WINTER IN MALAYSIA

It's the end of the harvest season and
the Chinese in Malaysia celebrate the
Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice) Festival
by serving colourful rice flour balls
cooked in a sugary soup. The Malaysian
version of the annual dessert is sometimes
flavoured with pandan leaves instead
of ginger.
Story: Food for thought.
Staring at the glutinous
balls in my soup, I was thinking of
a way to photograph it without upsetting
my Mum. Fortunately, I had a close-up
filter and a mini table-top tripod in
the bag. The add-on diopter lens allowed
the camera to get within a few inches
of the bowl and helped softened the
harsh reflections from the fluorescent
light above. Somehow, the reduced depth-of-field
and the milky soup blended well.
Tip: Make use of other stuff found on
the dining table. A little bit of salad
oil smeared onto parts of the filter
created the diffused and glowing effect.
