DONALD
WORRIED NO MORE Exclusive by
TV Smith 10/07/05
This blog regularly receives letters copied from readers who wrote
to newspapers. The writers may be seeking alternative publication but I think
in most cases, all they wanted was to put their concern on record.
| On
April 29 this year, reader Donald Tan copied me a letter he sent to a major newspaper.
In it, he stated his worries about a precariously perched flyover. It was being
built over a busy expressway he uses daily. He
also enclosed a picture (above). The letter was
never published by the newspaper nor the subject investigated for reasons unknown.
That original letter is reproduced below.
This afternoon, prophetically enough, the structure collapsed onto the road below,
smashed a passing car and injured several workers. Ironically and fortunately,
Donald drove under the structure (yet) again, five minutes before the incident.
On his way home, he took another picture with his phone cam (left). Donald is
worrried no more. |

Bridge worrySubject:
BRIDGE WORRY! Dear Editor, Everytime we passes under this bridge,
we get the shivers! Is this safe? Do the highway operator guarantee that
it is safe to pass under this bridge? It is without any end-support except that
the only pillar is on one side and they are adding the length section by section
until it reaches the other support pillar on the other side!! I believe
that they should at least, build a safety platform directly below the structure
so that vehicles get some form of protection should something fails. Are we insured
by the highway operator should there be an accidental collapse of this structure?
With new tremors being felt in the Peninsular from the Sumatra area and the latest
one was yesterday's 6.5 scale, we are not really confident about this overhanging
structure. We need the operator's feedback on this. The site concerned
was a swampy area and is still flooded every time it rains. Is the foundation
secure? Is this cost cutting? Adding sections by sections so as to complete the
bridge adds on weight. We are talking about the weight in tons per section. We
doubt its safety. We pay to use the Expressway and we want assurance. Enclosed
is a picture taken last week. Thank you for your attention, Regards, Donald
