As an avid photographer, I have been making
annual pilgrimages to the Nine Emperor
Gods Festival in Ampang. On every ninth
month of the lunar calendar, a quiet little
temple and its surroundings are transformed
into a colourful carnival of religious rituals
filled with smoke and fire. With devotees
and money flowing in from far and wide, the
festival has become a bizarre mix of spiritual
practice and free enterprise.
At the entrance, professional beggars and
enterprising monks compete for attention and
alms. Under a makeshift shelter, fortune-tellers
set up shops next to caged birds and tortoises
seeking freedom through paying liberators.
Inside the temple, female worshippers in skimpy
outfits kneel before deities while a beer
company's buntings fly alongside the lighted
pagodas above. Around the temple grounds,
energetic Indonesian workers help keep the
giant joss sticks burning, amidst noisy hawkers
and a traditional opera show. And, for just
nine days, nearby houses are voluntarily converted
into car parks, vegetarian restaurants or
candle shops.
EPTAS presents a special nineteen-page photo
essay of this unique and photogenic event...
