CHASING A CHARIOT

TV: After a quick refueling at 3:00 am, we made a stopover in the opposite direction of the procession. Soon after, we drove towards Gombak and arrived at Batu Caves before the sea of humanity trickles in.

3:40 am: An overhanging banana plant sways gently in front of the giant statue of Lord Murugan

Lu Sean: The chariot made its way slowly passing by Hindu and Indian establishments, stopping every once in a while to bless their businesses and small children who were held up to the priests on the chariot. After a while, most of the crowd had overtaken the chariot and the first devotees started trickling into the caves at 4:00 am. They were still going strong and started their way up the long flight of stairs with determination. Some women I saw rolled themselves on the path leading up to the stairs as a gesture of humility.
