Initially, I was thinking of covering the event with the E-1, a trio of lenses, tele-converter, FL-50 flash and a monopod. At the last minute, the Olympus folks handed me the newly arrived E-510 dSLR with built-in image stabilization.
I brought along 4 X 4g CF cards, 2 X 2g xD cards and 3 battery packs. As it turned out, I was able to shoot over 1400 images with just a single battery. Live View and playback were used sparingly, though.
The two small lenses that came with the camera provided coverage from 28mm to 300mm (35mm equivalent). I ended up using the 40-150 lens most of the time, since the background at the paddocks are ever so cluttered. The narrower depth-of-field helped isolate the faces.
For its size and weight, the image quality of both kit lens is surprisingly good. Best of all, the two lenses and camera body fit into a small messenger bag with plenty of room to spare. Think mobility and agility.
Look out for more pictures with the E-510 at my Picture Story series.
