The
Orang Asli community in Janda Baik received health checks and treatment from the
roving Ti-Ratana / Lions Club
of Serdang Mobile Clinic recently. I tagged along to observe the efforts of this
bunch of energetic volunteers, once again.
With rapid deforestation and
dislocation, the indigenous minority groups are at a precarious crossroad. Coerced
by the state to assimilate into mainstream society, most ended up living on the
fringe with wobbly feet in both worlds. Paradoxically, with education their children
may be their best hope for reclaiming what is left of their ancestral lands, identity
and culture...
