FIRE & RAIN

It
has always rained during the Nine Emperor
Gods Festival, for as long as I can
remember. The nine-day festival culminates
in a fire- walking ritual where devotees
parade on a bed of burning coal. True
enough, it poured heavily during last
night's finale and there was not one
inch of shelter in the barricaded area
where the action took place. The giant
bonfire kept me warm as I got myself
thoroughly soaked.
Story: Combining
the elements
The conventional approach would
be to photograph the firewalkers with
blinding flash as they exit on one end
(left). I opted for a different angle
and technique. For a more dramatic and
dynamic picture; I combined the fire,
smoke and rain with a slow shutter speed
instead. It is also good to note that
the Oly 8080 functioned dependably under
such adverse conditions. I could even
squeeze water from its neck strap.

Emperor Gods Festival photo
