Self-assignment:
To create a Merdeka Day picture greeting
card. My initial idea was to photograph
those rowdy flag-touting bikers roaming
the streets on the eve of every National
Day. But then, I remembered, they were
usually shirtless, uncooperative and
fond of politically incorrect hand gestures.
So I decided to reenact a gentler form
of patriotism...
Story: Independent
timing.
Friends Sherman and Radha on two wheels.
Paul Yeoh drove the 'camera car' with
me shooting and shouting from the back
seat. The photo op wasn't as easy as
I first thought. Getting the timing
correct was quite complex (left). To
make matters worse, my camera assistant,
Hani, became car sick. I had to coordinate
the two vehicles, get the background
right, set exposure on the move and
wait for the flag to flutter correctly.
One hour, twenty kilometers and some
fifty shots later, we had a picture
to celebrate about. Tip: Move the camera
during the (slow) exposure to create
the crooked and dramatic light trails.
