TRANSIT OF VENUS

This
afternoon, planet Venus crossed the
Sun's path for the first time since
1882 or 120 years ago. No living person
today has ever witnessed such a phenomenon.
Seen above as a small black speck against
the sun, this very rare event, known
as the Transit
of Venus,
occurs only twice in this century. The
second and last Venus transit of the
21st century will be eight years from
now, in the early morning of June 6,
2012. If you missed that again, wait
till 2117.
Story: Solar
Power
I photographed it from the
compound of my house in Kuala Lumpur
at 15:00 hrs (+8 GMT/UTC). An 8mp camera
provided a closer crop without a tight
zoom. The main challenge was cutting
down the powerful solar light. Even
with the lowest ISO 50 setting and highest
shutter speed/aperture combination,
it was still too bright (left). I ended
up stacking 4 Cokin T & G Grads
plus a Hoya ND4 filter in front of the
lens.
Warning: Do not view the sun directly
with naked eyes, binoculars or optical
viewfinders as it will cause permanent
damage to your eyes.
