INDEPENDENT
CELEBRATIONS
by TV Smith 31/08/04
I
jostled my way into Dataran
Merdeka last night, hoping to take part in the annual midnight mass karaoke
session. As with previous years, 99% of the enthusiastic crowd gathered there
were Malays. As anticipated, 99% of the 99% came on 2-stroke 2-wheelers. Exactly
2 seconds after the last flecks of ash and sulphur from the fireworks drifted
down from the heavens, mega hell broke loose. 2 million wolf-whistling, stunt
riding motorcyclists took to the streets, waving flags borrowed from the surroundings.
So where were the kialuan
Chinese? They congregated at the safe havens of Sunway and Ikano, I was told.
Others celebrated at ever-mushrooming housing estates with pseudo-elitist tags
like Prima or Perdana. Jaya is passe after 47 years, it seems. Driving
along Brickfields later, I saw groups of flag brandishing Indian youths leaped
dangerously into the path of moving traffic, shouting "Mar-day-kar!"
I wondered, what would happen if that car with flags plastered on every square
inch ran over one of them? Mr
Bow Tie would have cried us another river if he witnessed the antics of our once-a-year
patriots. We need more public holidays and arches. How about Integration Day? Happy
Merdeka, dear readers.
